Britain has become the latest country to ban ByteDance-owned short-video app TikTok on government devices. Speaking in Parliament, Senior Cabinet Secretary Oliver Dowden announced the ban would take effect immediately, describing it as a “precautionary measure”. The ban, which follows an assessment of TikTok by cybersecurity experts at the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre, applies to the work phones of ministers and civil servants, not their personal phones. At least two UK ministers use TikTok — Michelle Donelan, the science minister, and Grant Shapps, the energy security and zero emissions minister.
