Samsung will spend $230 billion to build a chip base
Samsung Electronics announced Wednesday that it plans to invest 300 trillion won ($230 billion) over the next 20 years to build the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturing base near Seoul. At the heart of the chip-making supercluster, to be completed in Gyeonggi Province by 2042, are five new semiconductor factories from Samsung, which the South Korean government hopes will attract 150 component, material and chip design companies. As a giant in the global memory (Memory) business, Samsung is trying to expand its influence in the field of advanced chips, and demand for chips will surge in the next few years as new technologies such as 5G, AI and self-driving cars become popular.
