Australian insurance company Medibank confirmIn a recent ransomware attack, hackers accessed the personal information and some claims data of all of its clients, including all of its international student clients. Medibank is one of Australia’s largest private health insurers, with more than 3.7 million customers. On October 12 it detected a ransomware attack and immediately shut down some systems. It initially issued a statement saying the hackers were stopped before encrypting the system and there was no evidence that customer data was stolen. But ransomware gangs contacted the company days later, saying 200 gigabytes of data were stolen and 100 file samples were provided as evidence. In a subsequent investigation Medibank found that all customer personal data had been accessed.
