U.S. national security review of Elon Musk rumored to involve foreign acquisition of Twitter

It is reported that the U.S. government is considering a national security review of local companies. Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and SpaceX founder, will be one of the objects under review, as well as Twitter, which is being acquired.

U.S. officials are concerned about Elon Musk’s earlier pro-Russian Twitter and threats to cut off service to Ukraine’s Starlink satellite network, Bloomberg reported, citing sources. However, the sources said the plans are still in the early stages and the regulatory approach is being worked out, possibly through the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) law under the U.S. Treasury Department to scrutinize Elon Musk companies.

The report pointed out that, in addition to Elon Musk’s comments on Twitter and his attitude towards Ukraine, his upcoming $44 billion (about 345.3 billion Hong Kong dollars) Twitter acquisition plan to be completed next Friday (28th) will also lead to a national security review by the United States. One of the main reasons, because Saudi Arabia’s Prince Alwaleed bin Talal and Shanghai company Binance are among Elon Musk’s foreign investors.

A Treasury Department spokeswoman said CFIUS would not comment publicly on whether any potential transactions would be reviewed. Twitter and SpaceX did not respond to the report.
