An EU official said on Friday (16th) that because Elon Musk suspended multiple accounts, it may violate the “Digital Services Act”, so that Twitter may face fines of more than billions of dollars, or even be banned from the entire EU.
Elon Musk recently released a new policy that blocks the Twitter accounts of multiple media outlets and prohibits all users from sharing real-time locations of third parties. Věra Jourová, vice president of the European Commission, found Elon Musk’s move worrying. She cited the EU’s Digital Services Act, which will come into full force in 2024, saying that social media platforms must “respect media freedom and fundamental rights.”
Věra Jourová continued that the EU’s “Media Freedom Act” passed in September strengthened the responsibility of social media platforms, requiring platforms to take responsibility for the speeches of their users. She believes that Elon Musk should already be aware of this problem, and has stated earlier that there is a “red line” and that “there will be sanctions soon.”
According to the “Digital Services Act”, violations may be fined up to 6% of the platform’s global annual revenue. If Twitter is convicted, it could be fined billions of dollars and even banned from use throughout the European Union.
