“Qi2” integrates MagSafe technology, and Android phones can also use magnets for wireless charging

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) announced during the “Consumer Electronics Show 2023” (CES 2023) that the next-generation Qi standard called “Qi2” will integrate Apple’s Magsafe magnet charging technology to ensure that mobile phones and other battery-powered devices Electronics interface perfectly with chargers for energy efficiency and faster charging.

WPC executive director Paul Struhsaker said Qi2 will become the global standard for wireless charging and provide assurance to consumers and retailers. The higher charging efficiency and faster charging speed that Qi2 will bring will also bring consumers a safer, energy-saving wireless charging experience that will not shorten battery life or damage the battery.

Currently, MagSafe is Apple’s proprietary standard and is a more convenient way to charge your iPhone. It uses accessories based on the Qi standard with strong magnets that align the accessories with the back of the unit.

Apple can still technically limit certain functions of MagSafe-certified accessories, but the publication of the Qi2 standard can ensure that such accessories are compatible with different mobile phones.

According to the WPC, it is estimated that 1 billion Qi2 devices will be sold worldwide in 2023, and the first batch of devices and accessories that support the Qi2 wireless charging specification unified standard certification are expected to be launched in the Christmas shopping period at the end of 2023.
