New research report in American Medical Journal may help children’s brain development – Hong Kong unwire.hk

Many parents are quite resistant to children playing video games, believing that it will stifle children’s mental development. According to the latest research report published in the American Medical Journal, it is believed that children playing video games can help brain development. In a report published last week in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), researchers at the University of Vermont analyzed the effects of video games on children’s brains.

The study analysed data from 2,217 children aged 9 to 10, split into two groups with and without video game play, carefully analyzing cognition, brain imaging and findings. Video games were found to affect children’s brains that serve as inhibitory control and working memory tasks associated with brain regions, producing signal differences related to blood oxygen levels. The researchers suggest that video games may be associated with improved cognitive abilities, including response inhibition and working memory, as well as shifts in underlying cortical pathways.

Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Substance Abuse, said research adds to our connection and understanding of video game play and brain development. While there have been many studies linking video games with behavioral and mental health problems, this study suggests that it may help cognitive development and warrants further investigation.
