Linux considers dropping support for Intel i486 CPUs

Linus Torvalds have expressedWillingness to remove support for Intel i486 processors from the kernel. After the Linux kernel removed support for i386 ten years ago, i486 is the minimum version supported by the kernel mainline for the x86 architecture. Linus Torvalds believes that the minimum version supported by the x86-32 architecture should be raised to cmpxchg8b, which is Pentium and higher. He pointed out that i486s are already considered exhibits that can be displayed in museums, and it is better to have them run the museum version of the kernel.
