Google engineers have submitted a patch to remove support for the experimental JPEG-XL image format in Chrome 110. Google engineers explained that there is a lack of interest in the JPEG-XL format across the ecosystem, the new format does not bring enough incremental benefits over the existing format, and the maintenance burden can be reduced by removing the relevant code to focus on improving the existing format. Google’s explanation is surprising, since the bitstream for JPEG-XL isn’t finalized until 2020, it’s not standardized until 2021, and it’s only a year old to require the ecosystem to have enough interest in it.
