EU plans to pay Starlink Ukraine service fee, Elon Musk says it will continue to fund

According to British media reports, the European Union is planning whether to pay for the Starlink service donated by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk to Ukraine to avoid the loss of Internet communication in Ukraine.

British “Financial Times” reported that space exploration technology company SpaceX plans to stop donating Starlink satellites to Ukraine, because the company spends up to 20 million US dollars a month to operate the devices.

Following the news, EU chief diplomat Josep Borrell has tasked officials with developing plans to strengthen Ukraine’s internet coverage and is evaluating whether to sign a contract with SpaceX to set up a joint fund to pay for Starlink services. In addition, some foreign media said that the U.S. Department of Defense is considering using funds from the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, a security assistance program involving Ukraine, to pay for related expenses to continue to support Ukraine’s communications facilities.

Elon Musk later said that even if Starlink was still losing money, SpaceX would continue to fund the Ukrainian government. However, some EU officials expressed concern about the reliability of Elon Musk’s remarks.

SpaceX’s mobile internet system is critical to communications for the Ukrainian military, which now has more than 20,000 Starlink satellites, many of which are used by the military.
