China Shuts Down Anime Pirate Site After Japan Complaint

Japan’s anti-piracy organization CODA (Cultural Products Overseas Circulation Promotion Agency) shut down B9Good, a pirated animation website operating in China but targeting Japan. CODA filed a criminal complaint in China on behalf of Aniplex, TV Tokyo, Toei Animation, Toho, NHK and Bandai Namco, and was supported by 21 other companies during the investigation. The Jiangsu public security department arrested 4 people and seized a building worth A house of about 4 million RMB. B9GOOD has been in operation since 2008, using the B9DM brand, with around 15 million monthly visits, and more than 300 million visits in the two years from March 2021 to February 2023, 95% of which are from Japan. B9Good appeared on the list of notorious markets of the Office of the United States Trade Representative in 2019. At that time, the monthly visits were close to 16 million, which means that the visits of B9Good have remained basically stable in the past three years. The Chinese police took control of the 33-year-old man who participated in the operation of the website on February 14, and he was released on bail on the 19th of this month.
