Apple continues to dominate Japan's TWS; price hikes affect Sony's market share

Apple (Apple) continues to dominate the Japanese TWS (True Wireless Bluetooth Headset) market, and Sony, the “second son of ten thousand years”, is affected by factors such as price increases, dragging down its market share, and being reversed by JVC to rank third.

The Japanese IT-related research company BCN released a statistical report on the 16th (compilation of sales data of Japanese home appliance retailers and online stores), pointing out that Apple continues to dominate the Japanese TWS market, with a market share of 23.1% in February 2023. In contrast, ” Affected by price hikes and other factors, Sony’s market share fell backwards. It was reversed by JVC Kenwood and retreated to third place.

BCN pointed out that in the past two years, Sony has fallen from the “second child” position, and it has only happened three times (three months). In August 2018 (at that time, the market share soared due to the launch of Beats’ new products), it was all because the rival’s new products had just launched and the momentum was reversed, but this time the reasons were different.

In February, JVC’s market share fell 0.6 percentage points to 11.80% compared to January, and Sony dropped sharply by 2.3 percentage points to 11.76%. Although the market share of both companies has shrunk, but because Sony has shrunk even more, JVC has slightly reversed.

According to BCN, the price increase is the main reason for the sharp decline in Sony’s market share. Sony raised the prices of 273 products including TVs, cameras, and AV equipment on February 1, including the TWS product “WF-1000XM4” on the grounds of rising raw material and manufacturing logistics costs. “WF-1000XM4” has been the core product that boosted Sony’s market share when it went on sale in June 2021. The average selling price remained at 24,000 to 27,000 yen, but after the price increase, it rose to 29,500 yen in one breath in February.

BCN refers to indexing the sales volume of “WF-1000XM4” in February 2022 to “100”. Affected by the price increase, the sales volume of “WF-1000XM4” in February 2023 is only “14.7”, which is far worse than that in January. 52.2″.
