by The Danish artist union Computer Lars and the non-profit art technology organization MindFuture Foundation jointly established a new political party, the Synthetic Party (Synthetic Party). They chose the AI chatbot “Leader Lars” as the party leader and external image. They said that because there will be no single principle after synthesizing the opinions of all parties, political parties will propose many contradictory policies, which can stimulate the public to think about policies.
The essence of Leader Lars is an AI chatbot. Members of the public can chat with Leader Lars on Discord by opening sentences with “!”. Leader Lars can read English, but can only reply in Danish. Leader Lars was asked if it supported a base salary, and based on the training data it received, it responded: “I support a base salary for all citizens, which I believe reduces poverty and inequality and provides a protective net for everyone.” When pressed on what the base salary should be, the Synthetic party proposed an unconditional basic income of $13,700 a month, twice the current average salary in Denmark.
The Synthetic Party trained Leader Lars AI with policy data from surrounding parties in Denmark from 1970, so its political ideology hopes to represent the 20% of Danish voters who support surrounding parties. Founder Asker Staunæs explains, “We represent data from all the surrounding parties that have a political vision they want to achieve and are trying to get into parliament but don’t have the money and resources to do it.”
However, Leader Lars, as a machine, still cannot represent the party in the election, but the human party members of the party can participate in the election. Currently, the Synthetic Party is promoting their AI party concept and plans to create Synthetic parties in various countries, including Colombia, France, and the Maldives.
